Ang Xia Yi 洪 嘉 苡 (b.1996, Kuala Lumpur) currently lives and works in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Her multidisciplinary practice incorporates various mediums from photography, installation and video-based works placed within the intersection of personal identity, memory and history of Malaysia in archipelagic Southeast Asia. Her multi-layered visual language is drawn from historical references, found objects, popular culture and archives through acts of reinterpretation, archival exploration with digital and physical manipulation of everyday materials.

Through her works, she actively seeks to engage in a critical discourse around colonialism and the postcolonial legacies imparted upon the land, culture and the community she grew up with. The memories of her past, present and concerns of what her future may hold. Every layer of imagery instigates an introspective dialogue between her, the artist and the viewer. She has previously pursued her BA in Fashion Journalism at Central Saint Martins, London in 2017 and has since been actively participating in art programmes and exhibitions.

No. 3262 Passport (2021)

A real/fake passport with a reconfigured identity of myself while exploring the empty pages of my passport as travel restrictions has been imposed and set in placed for the past 2 years. This was made with thoughts towards individuals and families that have experienced forms of discrimination, intimidation and treatment of ‘ double standards ‘ in Malaysia throughout this pandemic.  I am heartbroken that deaths are being reduced to just numbers and statistical readings.

This passport contains a sensitive heart. Do not bend, perforate or expose to extreme temperatures.
